For anyone who has been touched by the services that these units provide, and the level of care that babies receive, it takes your breath away. Babies so small and helpless are not receiving the same one to one care that can be expected for adults and children, and this is something we are striving to change. In Scotland alone, over 150 specialist staff are still needed, to get the staffing levels upto the recommended standards as NONE of our hospitals currently meet them.

Born in October 2007, Special Care Baby is a non-profit organisation and as at 23 February 2008, we became a registered Scottish Charity. Our initial aim was to raise £25,000 to help the Special Care Baby Unit, at St Johns Hospital in Livingston, to buy new equipment and amenities for babies and their families.What started off as a small fund-raising initiative has grown and Special Care Baby has now become the first charity of it’s kind in Scotland.

Sadly, however, our current climate dictates that ordinary people, and/or families who have been touched by the need for Special and Neonatal Intensive Care Baby Units are the ones who have to raise the profile and money to secure new and vital equipment for these units.

Some of the most amazing work is done by people who receive little recognition and it is for them as much as for the babies and their families that the Special Care Baby exists.
